The Scam:
This is a simple sounding but actually quite complex gambling system designed to minimise losses and maximise wins on even money games (such as the flip of a coin) and on games with close to even money (such as roulette.). It is sold as a part of expensive betting systems to would be punters by con artists who know the real money isn't made in casinos, it's made from swindling gamblers.

It doesn't work.

The theory is that you risk only $20 at a time in order to win $120. There are four bets made in each round of the system. Once the four bets have been completed or the victim loses, they have to start again.

BET ONE: Bet $10 - if you lose, you have lost a total of $10. Losers start again. If you win, go to Bet Two.
BET TWO: Bet $30 - if you lose, you have lost a total of $20. Losers start again. If you win, got to Bet Three.
BET THREE: Bet $20 - if you lose, you have $20 profit. Start again! If you win, go to Bet Four.
BET FOUR: Bet $60 - if you lose, you have broken even. If you win, you now have $120 and have only risked $20 of your original money.

The victim appears to have made $120 but only risked $20!

THIS DOES NOT WORK.

There are only FIVE final outcomes for this system
.

This is the breakdown for an even money game.

50% of the time a victim tries this system, he will lose $10.
25% of the time a victim tries this system, he will lose $20.
12.5% of the time a victim tries this system, he will WIN $20 (even money)
6.25% of the time, the victim will break even
6.25% of the time, the victim will win $120!

This means that on 81.25% attempts, the victim will break even or LOSE money.
They will make even money only 12.5% of the time.
They will 'hit the jackpot" only 6.25% of the time.

Over a long period of time, the odds are exactly even. On a close to even money game such as roulette or blackjack where the house has the edge, the victim will always end up losing.

One feature of this system that helps gamblers feel good about their gambling is that there are many small losses and a few BIG wins. This makes the wins more memorable for the gambler and the losses less significant looking.

But they are not!

Variations:
This is nothing more then more complex version of the Martingale system where new bets seem to be covering old losses.

Another similar system is the 1,2,3,3

Take
Nothing, Zero, Zip. Unless you sell this system to suckers.
