The Scam
A monkey paw is a piece of apparatus designed to manipulate the coin counter of a electronic gaming machine. The coin counter can not tell how many coins have been delivered. It continues to pay out coins.

Variations
The original monkey paw was made from twist coat hanger wire and would work on mechanical poker machines. Those machines worked via pulls, cogs and physical wheels.

When gaming machines become electronic a new tool called a light wand or light stick was introduced. These new machines used light sensors to count the coins. The light wand used a camera battery and bright bulb to blind the machine a prevent it from accurately counting coins.

Take
The father of modern slot machine scams, Tommy Carmichael, managed to take numerous machines for $200,000 before being caught. He would also sell light wands for upwards of $10,000.
